Zinc rich primers are specialized types of paint that contain a high concentration of zinc. Rust-O-Zinc Inorganic Zinc Rich Primer is a two component, ethyl silicate-based primer that provides cathodic corrosion protection to steel substrates. Rust-O-Zinc is designed to be used as a primer on blast-cleaned steel where maximum corrosion protection is needed.

  • Rapid cure—dry to handle in 45 minutes at 60°F (16°C) and 50% relative humidity

To prepare the surface, wash it with Krud Kutter® Original Cleaner & Degreaser, commercial detergent or another suitable cleaner. Rinse it with fresh water and let it dry. Make sure the surface is completely dry before you start. Then use an abrasive blast to clean it, following the instructions in SSPC-SP 6/NACE No. 3, “Commercial Grade Power Tool Cleaning to Bare Metal.” If you don’t have access to an abrasive blast, you can use a power washer with a 0° or 15° tip and hold it 10–12 inches from the surface. Start at the top and work your way down. Rinse the surface with fresh water and let it dry completely.

You can apply Rust-O-Zinc with an airless or conventional sprayer. If you’re using an airless sprayer, set it to a low pressure—around 1000 psi. If you’re using a conventional pump sprayer, fill it no more than half full to avoid overpressurizing. Start by spraying the underside of the surface, then work your way up. Overlap each stroke by 50%.

Rust-O-Zinc will start to dry in about 15 minutes, but it won’t be fully cured for 24 hours. For best results, apply a second coat after the first coat has dried.

Zinc-rich primers are an excellent choice for protecting steel and iron surfaces from rust and corrosion. They provide a high level of protection and can extend the lifespan of the metal. If you’re looking for maximum protection, choose a zinc-rich primer with high zinc content.

Rust-O-Zinc Inorganic Zinc Rich Primer protects your surface from corrosion if it is exposed to pH levels between 5 and 9. Do not use alkyd topcoats over Rust-O-Zinc.
